A few years ago I made a small Church calendar for my family to use. I wanted to show the natural seasons, spiritual seasons, and the colors of each space and time. I quickly realized that the piece I made was to small to use in a community context, hence piece number two.

Moon Lit

When I think about summer I think of:

A warm evening breeze
The sound of crickets
The smell of warm dirt and dry grass
And an insane amount of starts in the sky

And it calms me down like a drug.

I don’t really remember how this particular piece came about.

I do know I giggled the entire time I was putting it together. Of all my pieces, I had the most fun with this one. I still grin like an idiot when I look at it.

“Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me so love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. – - – Oh Divine Master grant that I may, not so much seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood, as to understand. To be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned. And its in dying that we are born into eternal life. Amen.”

This piece took a very long time for me to create and that was before I started actually working on it with my hands. I have loved this prayer for years. I memorized it (no small feat for me) for Lent one year. It was not until I thought up an image of a person in a meditation/prayer posture, hands balanced between acceptance/peace and resistance/justice, that I finally knew I could start to actually work on it. It still took a while to decide the back drop. I waffled between pure color, landscape, and frustration. Then I realized that because this prayer is relational the backdrop needed to be somehow social. Once I had that last piece of the whole, I became a focused frenzy trying to finish it. It was like a giant wave that took years to build up, starting as a little niggling in the back of my mind, and then ‘kaboom’, I had paper cuts all over my hands! I felt a huge sense of relief when it was finally finished.

Gods Other Holy Scripture

Text: God’s Other Holy Scripture

While in seminary, I had this brilliant professor who would harp on the fact that the Bible is not the only thing that tells us about God, and always with a look of wonder on his face. It would make me laugh how he could always sneak it in. After the third or fourth time I heard him say this phrase, I decided I needed to put his words on a canvas. I wanted to included parts of creation that are miniscule all the way up to the vastness of the cosmos; from dirt to distant starts.

Ecclisial Rhythm

We are so trained in this culture to march to certain rhythms that our reactions are utterly habitual and unquestioned. For example, for almost all of us, up to a certain age, when we see the word August at the top of the calendar it causes a physiological, mental, and emotional change (for some it is excitement and others sheer panic *grin*) that starts to prepare us for the end of summer and the beginning of school. For others of us, with the monotonous march our work lives, there is no real rhythm. In fact, changing things up is considered a disruption. There is no room for celebration, morning, reflection or rest.

The christian church calendar is ancient, yet can give so much for those who are willing to adapt their lives to match its rhythm. Not only is it natural, as it mirrors the natural seasons of the earth, but it allows room for natural human emotion and need.

I made this calendar for my family as we attempt to change the flow of our lives to match that of the church calendar. It is a great visual for my little boys, as they can look at it and see that the same time we are putting our garden out in the back yard “to bed” for the winter, we are also slowing ourselves down for a time of reflection. They can see the hope of new life coming with the spring after a long winter coupled with the space made for grieving during lent.

So that is what this calendar is about, being a healthier family by allowing our time to be guided by the wisdom of God-time.

Cram

Text: You can not cram the glory of God into something so thin as a fact.

This piece was both a risk and a curiosity for me. It was a risk because I had never created a collage with the intention of it being a show piece rather than a personal reflection piece before. Which meant it had to make some sort of sense to others and not just me. It was a curiosity because I had seen a similar art piece by someone else in water color and I wanted to see if using collage (with the bold color and collection of images) would add some depth to it.

Celtic Cross

Text: Thy will be done.

I made this piece specifically for a dear friend of mine, as Ireland is a special place for the both of us. When my husband and I went to Ireland I found this beautifully carved Celtic cross headstone in the ruins of an Abbey. In it were carved the words “thy will be done”, and the sight of it moved me to a place of humbleness.

Cross Roads

“This is what the Lord says: stand at the cross roads and look. Ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is and walk in it and you will find rest for your soul.”

I was sitting in my friend’s living room late one evening, hashing out my life, and my friend told me to look up this verse. I did and the verse immediately resonated with me. I stuck it in my little mental folder in the back of my brain labeled “things that should be art”. It didn’t take long to morph into an image and work its way onto a canvas. This was one of the easier pieces to wrestle from intangible into the real world.
